police officer was injured tonight as disturbances broke out in Heywood near Rochdale, Greater Manchester. Around 200 youths had gathered on Market Street in the centre of the town, swamped by police officers with dogs in vans at the ready. Yobs threw missiles including bricks at officers, windows were damaged at a takeaway and a number of vehicles were damaged. The officer suffered bruising to his legs and arms during a disturbance with a group of youths. One car and three police vehicles were also damaged. The group was dispersed by police a short time later. Eyewitnesses described how the youths, mostly male, gathered near the Morrisons supermarket off Dawson Street in the town centre. Greater Manchester Police appealed to parents to ask their children to go home following the disorder. Assistant Chief Constable Terry Sweeney said police were aware of "tensions in the borough".
